Is it Really Your Cross to Bear?
You know, life throws curve balls at everyone at one time or another. For some more frequently than others. For some longer than for others. And for some, it starts sooner than for others, even as soon as birth and it’s with you for your whole life.
So many times, especially when it’s not really a big thing, a huge part of your life or just something they have no idea what else to say – people are at times quick to say “well, I guess it’s just your cross to bear”.
What exactly does that mean? That “it’s your cross to bear”.
In the process of putting Jesus to death, they made Him CARRY His cross from where he was first beaten to Golgotha (the place of the skull.) That distance was about a quarter of a mile. With Jesus weakened by His severe beating, soldiers eventually ordered a passerby named Simon to carry the cross the remainder of the way.
Why did Jesus have to die on the cross anyway?
Why did Jesus have to die on the cross anyway?
When they arrived to Golgotha, they nailed him to the cross and dropped the cross with Jesus nailed to it into a hole in the ground. We don’t often think about that gruesome picture, but the cross was laid on the ground, Jesus was laid on his back on top of the cross and was literally NAILED by his two hands and two feet to the cross. THEN the cross was picked up with Jesus already nailed to it and dropped into a hole while he was left to bleed and die there. The drop alone, when it hit the bottom of the hole with a thud tore his flesh even more, exacerbating the pain and bleeding.
When people tell you that what you’re feeling, what you’re experiencing, that who you are is well – “just your cross to bear”, it can feel like they are saying “sorry, I don’t know how to help you”, “I guess you’re on your own”, “I got nothing”, “good luck with that” or finally – “you’ll just have to live with it.”
Encouraging isn’t it? Nothing is more encouraging and helpful than having someone tell you that it’s just your cross to bear and well, it’s all up to you.
The problem is that the term “your cross to bear” is a reference to Jesus and how He had to endure the cross for us. Why did Jesus have to die on the cross anyway? God requires perfection – He created Adam and Eve in a perfect world but gave them choice, and they chose sin (disobedience.)
We humans chose sin, bringing imperfection into paradise. In the Old Testament God provided ways to atone for the sin of the people through the sacrifices of animals. But the animals had to be perfect to erase the sins of the people before God, there could be no flaws or blemishes.
Jesus is called the “Lamb of God” (John 1:29) because He became the perfect, once and for all sacrifice for all of mankind. Our job is simple, just believe. Have the faith that God loved us so much that He did that for us.
Does that cross bring LIFE to others?
Does that cross bring LIFE to others?
But Jesus didn’t bear the cross so that everything else would be hard. Everything else would be difficult to deal with. That we would just have to “suck it up” when it comes to living. Nothing would have rhyme or reason.
Jesus came so that we may have LIFE! He bore the cross, he ENDURED the cross so that we may have life, and life at its very fullest (John 10:10.) Jesus bore His cross because His cross brings life to you and I who believe in Him.
So when people tell you that what you’re going through is just “your cross to bear”, then there’s a simple question to ask… Does that cross bring LIFE to others?
THAT’s the point of this. When people tell you this, does that “cross” bring life to others? For me, it almost brought death via suicide. When someone says it’s “your cross to bear” they don’t even understand the full meaning of what they just said. They are thinking they said you’re just stuck with something that is hard to live with and you have no options.
I want you to know that you DO have options, especially when you think suicide is your ONLY option. If you think suicide is your only option, then you haven’t fully explored all of your possible options.
Jesus died so that you may have life at its very fullest (more abundantly in some translations) – but never so you would kill yourself. I know, I’ve been there. There is an ABUNDANT life waiting for you, don’t let that son of a bitch (Satan if you’re new to my blog) try to tell you otherwise.
What you’re going through is NOT your cross to bear if it’s not bringing life to others. If your cross only brings misery and death to you, then what you’ve been told is a LIE! That SOB is better than anyone at telling lies. He has a smooth tongue, he’s a slick talker. Don’t listen to him. He’s a LIAR! Don’t let him do a number on you!
And as a bonus, here’s a song to tell you so…..
