Here’s Why Caring About People Sucks!
On Facebook people joke, people laugh, people taunt their friends in a friendly way. Something I saw tonight online just registered with me and I wanted to share it.
I’m a Texas Longhorn football fan. The university I went to in California was greatly respected for it’s music program, but unfortunately sports wasn’t its claim to fame. So you won’t find me wearing my old college colors and rooting for them because well, even in college we didn’t keep track all that much how they were doing.
But, NOW I live in Austin, Texas. You don’t live in Austin unless you’re a Texas Longhorn fan and maybe, just maybe an alumni of Texas A&M which is a hour and a half away. So shy of being an Aggie’s fan, it’s pretty much all about the Longhorns – and after moving here I was on board. It’s an exciting team to watch – ALWAYS lots of drama because if you’re not #1 in the entire country – well heads are bound to roll (and plenty of them have.)
So here I am this evening, scrolling down through my Facebook feed and lo and behold someone writes as a reply to a post about high school football (not even Longhorn related) “But God is a Longhorn fan because every day He sets the sun Burnt Orange, baby!!!!” (Burnt orange is the color of the University of Texas if you didn’t know.)
So now I’m sad. That little comment, totally unrelated to anything of any importance made me think of another post I saw a few days ago – about how the flooding in Houston was God’s PUNSHMENT (really Texas’ punishment) for wanting to pass a transgender bathroom bill. This came from someone who thought Texas SHOULD pass the bill.
We stupid people get all caught up like little children saying “he did it” or “she did it” or “they started it” or “I didn’t do anything!”

I wish I could just ignore that comment. I wish I could just laugh it off as say “yep! God is a Longhorn!” But I won’t, not because He isn’t (and we all know He is a Longhorn) but because we all want to claim God is on OUR side, just so we can pound people who don’t agree with us with our Bible and events in the world.
There are just so many things wrong with us who think God does things to punish this group or that group because of this or that.
That is old testament stuff that God did while He was teaching Israel about being a nation in line with what He wanted them to be.
But here we are thousands of years later. God doesn’t punished Texas with a flood because they wanted to pass a bathroom bill. Ironically for the person that posted that comment, Texas DIDN’T pass the bill – so was God punishing Texas for TRYING to pass the bill, or FAILING to pass the bill? Either side politically could stake a claim to this. Either side could blindly or with an inflated sense of righteousness claim God is “on our side.”
God is on YOUR side, transgender or not. Gay or not. Black or white or brown or yellow or not. Married or not. Male or female. God is on YOUR side.
YOU are his child. He LOVES you. His is on YOUR side. We stupid people get all caught up like little children saying “he did it” or “she did it” or “they started it” or “I didn’t do anything!”
We Christians can get just as petty and small minded as non-Christians. So if you have put your trust in Jesus, just remember – He LOVES you! Done. No more questions need to be answered.
Seeing people you care about getting beat up by others – especially if those “others’ are Christians hurts. You KNOW you love God and that He loves you. Help others around you grow in their trust in Christ and not get too burdened by those who don’t understand. God is on YOUR side!!!
Maybe my shortest post ever – but it’s still true. God LOVES you. YOU are His child. ‘Nuff said.

Beautiful! It’s the root cause of hate and bigotry in the Church. It’s a reflection of our own sick pride not God’s heart.
