Don’t Blame God Because People are Jerks!
Look, I totally get it. You see it in the news – such and such Christian group is against transgender bathroom bills or against some mom letting her little boy present as a girl in school. I get it. You’re crazy out of your mind mad at them. And the next thing you ask is “how could a God be so hateful toward people?” Well, the truth is He’s not! PEOPLE is the keyword in what we’re talking about here. PEOPLE can seem hateful and uncaring. The truth is they’re not hateful, but have such a different perspective that it comes across as “hateful”.
Let me begin by talking about something most of us can relate to. We are all part of a family. We may have brothers and/or sisters. There may be one who doesn’t really “represent” the family very well. Maybe they are on drugs. Maybe they are prejudice against someone who doesn’t look like them, has a different skin color. Maybe they are just MEAN! That doesn’t make the whole family mean, but yes, this particular child in spite of being raised in a good home with loving parents just turned out to be a mean person. People are a mess!
Yet at the same time, God is good. God is VERY good and loves you. Granted, some of His children may not represent the family of Christ very well, but don’t equate a child of God with God Himself.
You have to trust me – I get it. I have been beaten up by His children. My own family in virtually every respect is Christian yet they won’t talk to me. I belonged to a church that was like a family to me and I was forced to leave. It’s so easy to call that “hate”. I see that word thrown around way too often. I’m pretty sure my own family doesn’t hate me even after all these years – but at the same time they have NO IDEA how to process the face that I’m transgender. That church certainly didn’t “hate” me, in fact they loved and thought they were doing the right thing – EVERYTHING needs to be looked at in perspective.
Don’t blame God for the shortfalling of people. People are people and God is God. He sent Jesus, His Son here to die for you so you don’t have to endure what He did, if you’re a Christian you already know that. But I’ll admit there are many within Christ’s church that make it really hard to feel welcomed into His body. There is a place for you, there is a home for you. Eventually, ALL the people within His church will come around, but there are churches TODAY that are welcoming, accepting and affirming of WHO you are. Seek them out, you will find Christ’s love and support there.
