Recently I asked almost 20,000 people in various Facebook transgender groups for their experience with the Church, good or bad as Christians who are transgender. I wanted to hear first person accounts of those who actually have been a part of a church community. What people told me breaks my heart as I imagine it breaks the heart of our Lord and maybe yours. It’s a rhetorical question (I don’t even like coffee) but sadly, there are people who wouldn’t. There are people who wouldn’t want to be in the same room with me, and yes there are people who wouldn’t want to belong to the same church as me.
Do I have some kind of “death in mere moments” airborne disease that if “I cough – you die” while wearing a biohazard sign? Am I a terrorist wearing a vest made up of high explosive with my finger pressing a button and if I let go everything and everyone around me is blown to smithereens? Do I look and dress like a drug addict or homeless person on some skid row street – wearing nothing but dirty rags and smell of urine and alcohol? Those of you who are not transgender I get it, you’re doing your best to get your head around it. What to say? How do you say it? Is it he, she, they, it? It can get REALLY complicated, but I’ll keep it short and simple here… Read more “May I Correct/Inform My Non-Transgender Friends? A Brief Tutorial”
Renee, a precious friend saw a video in her Facebook feed today that stirred something in her heart. What she wrote following that was so raw and heartfelt I asked for permission to repost it here and she graciously agreed. It’s a reminder that though we may seek to be like Jesus, I think most of us can agree we have a long way to go yet. Read more “A Friend Opens Her Heart and TRUTH Spills Out”
I’m struck at how we Christians, ALL of us Christians if asked would be pretty quick to say “yes”, that we unconditionally love and accept our Christian brothers and sisters. Maybe you’re reading this and are thinking to yourself “well I certainly do!” Read more “UNCONDITIONAL Love and Acceptance CAN’T Have Conditions”
I’m sure you’ve heard it before – “Men and women are wired differently”. What a man thinks, wants and needs can be very different from what a woman may think, want or need. Almost 25 years ago John Gray published his now famous book “Men Are from Mars, Woman Are from Venus” to help men and women better understand each other in relationships. And the reason the book was even necessary (and as a result so popular) is because God has made the sexes unique BEYOND the obvious physical differences. At the same time, we live in a society that tries to deny that those differences do exist, it can get very confusing. Read more “People Can’t Re-Wire Themselves, It’s Been Tried. It saddens me to see Christians who come out with absolute certainty and a sense of righteousness tell another person who professes Christ that they are NOT a Christian because they see something in that person’s life that they don’t like or agree with.
I remember when I was a kid I would see somebody smoke outside of a church and I couldn’t imagine how that person could be a Christian. I mean, how could that even be possible? I was taught our body is a temple (but apparently sweet tea, fried chicken, pizza and chocolate chip cookies are allowed in “the temple”.) The same was true for alcohol. Even in high school I didn’t understand how a Christian could drink beer or wine, only non-Christians did that, right? Read more “When Christians Think They’re God”
